First Stripes Program turns students into professionals
By Sofia Yamuni, Senior Recruiting Associate
& Carolina Orantes Anchondo, Training Analyst
Kellanova Mexico’s First Stripes program recruits top university students to a minimum six-month internship and then hires many into entry-level roles once they graduate. To learn more about this successful program, Kellanova Careers interviewed Sofia from our recruiting team and Carolina, who was a First Stripes student and now works for the company as a training analyst.
Putting classroom knowledge into practice
Sofia: We started the First Stripes program in 2018 to identify talented university students and prepare them for our entry-level roles. They are with us for a minimum of six months or up to their graduation. During this time, they work on real projects important to our company’s success – no made-up assignments for these students! We have two First Stripe groups each year, one arrives in September and another in February. There are about 50 students in each class.
Carolina: First Stripes is a wonderful opportunity for students who want to get a start on their professional careers. Kellanova is recognized as a great place to work, and a lot of students want to get into the program. The company respects the interns and does a lot to help us grow into top-notch professionals. We receive a monthly scholarship and Kellanova is flexible with our work hours so we can continue going to school and graduate on time.
Kellanova hires First Stripes students from all over Mexico
Sofia: Students like Carolina are why we created the First Stripes program. She worked in our Queretaro cereal production facility for one year, with four separate assignments in four different operational areas. She did an excellent job on each one and we were so happy to be able to offer her a full-time role. We’re equally pleased to have hired another 20 students from the most recent cohort.
Carolina: As an industrial engineering student, I learned a lot about employee health and safety, cereal production, quality, and logistics. I was excited to be able to put the knowledge I gained in the classroom into practice. Everything I learned about professional life I learned through First Stripes, so it was an easy transition into my career when I was hired. I already knew the company and many people. The way I look at it, my professional life actually started when I joined First Stripes.
Sofia: Kellanova hires First Stripes students from all over Mexico for work at our plants in Linares, Mexicali, Queretaro and Toluca, as well as at our Latin American headquarters location in Queretaro.
Carolina: First Stripes was one of the best opportunities of my life. I learned how to act in a workplace and how to succeed in a company.
